Pinterest Marketing Tips- Consistently post fresh new pins

Anthropologie Pinterest

Fresh content has become increasingly important over the last year. What exactly do we mean when we say “new pins” or “fresh pins”?

Pinterest defines fresh pins as photos or videos that have never been viewed before. These new pins can be:

  • A brand-new image that has been added to a newly launched web page.
  • New or different photos for a recently published web page.
  • A new or different photo from an older page.

You might notice more interaction on an already-used image by transferring the image to a new board, however, this is not considered a “fresh pin.” A previously used image with a new title or description is likewise not considered “fresh.”

On that note, an image is that “new” or “fresh” won’t be successful if it leads to bad or irrelevant content.

The Pinterest algorithm favors more current and relevant content. These pins will be shared more widely and, therefore, seen by more people.

Research from Buffer also shows that posting 5 to 30 times a day on Pinterest is an effective strategy. Here are a few things to think about while planning a strategy for pinning more:

  • Planning and scheduling ahead makes pinning a lot easier.
  • Come up with a batch of good content, and then plan to post it over the span of a few days. This way you’ll have a steady stream of quality Pinterest content for your followers.

Pinterest Marketing Tips- Post relevant pins

Away suitcase Pinterest

Always post relevant content. If you’re a brand that sells men’s watches, then stick to posting content about watches. Don’t veer from your industry as this will confuse your followers.

To boost your performance, we suggest saving pins only on your most relevant boards. Customizing the pins to the individual boards is a great tactic.

Pin content that pinners are seeking for. Not all content works on Pinterest, so keep an eye on your analytics to discover what’s working and what’s not.

Another thing to note is to be timely. The new Pinterest Trends may be used to compare topics and see which performs better during a particular month.

Pictured above is an example of a brand that consistently posts relevant content. Away only posts product photos of their suitcases and other travel packs.

Pinterest Marketing Tips- Add keywords to your titles

Casetify Pinterest Keyword Title

Pinterest’s algorithm and search function is excellent. Use keywords in your pin titles to help more people find and learn about your company. Make sure each pin has a board and a category so that others can locate it and Pinterest can promote it.

Pinterest Marketing Tips- Use keywords in your descriptions

Delightfull Pinterest Keyword Description

Again, utilize keywords in your titles AND description. The text in the pin description should be brief, intriguing, and relevant. Note that only 75-100 characters of your description will display in grid view, but you can go up to 500 characters if you want to. The rest of the description will only show up when users click to see the pin up close.

The Pinterest team outlines five tips for writing up your pin descriptions that they’ve found to be the most useful.

  • Details that are beneficial.
  • Keywords or keyword phrases.
  • A few sentences.
  • Positive.
  • Give the reader a task to do. Tell them which step to take next, then add a relevant/valuable link.

Pinterest also went above and beyond by sharing some comprehensive recommended practices:

  • Correct capitalization and punctuation is recommended.
  • Don’t add hashtags.
  • Skip out on the promotional information.
  • Don’t use CTAs that sound like a sales pitch.
  • Avoid referencing Pinterest features.

Tip: It’s better to have shorter keyword rich descriptions than long ones. Studies have shown more conversions in shorter descriptions than the latter. We also suggest adding links to your descriptions. It’s a great tactic to generate clicks and traffic.

Pinterest Marketing Tips- Make use of rich pins

Rich Pin example

A ‘rich pin’ is a Pinterest tool that allows you to add more information and detail to your pins for free. These are similar to Twitter Cards or the open graph on Facebook. They’re made to improve the pinning experience for both pinners and those who are pinned.

In order to try this feature, you’re going to need to get your website validated. After double-checking that all of the necessary code is in place, you can start adding rich pins from your own website.

The five types of rich pins are:

  • Product pins- This will include pricing, where to buy it, and whether or not it’s available.
  • Article pins- This will include the article’s headline, author, description, and link.
  • Movie pins- This will include reviews, ratings, and cast members.
  • Recipe pins- This will include ingredients and serving size.
  • Location pins- This will include an address, map pins, and a contact number.

Pinterest Marketing Tips- Post the perfect sized images

Canva Pinterest Template Example

Long and portrait photographs on Pinterest take up the most visual space. These images get the most attention because they fit Pinterest’s format. Look at the photos in your favorite pins and see what they have in common to discover what kinds of photos are being re-pinned and shared. This gives a compelling reason for others to re-pin your pinned content.

In fact, Pinterest even stated back in 2018 that:

“Pins look best when they’re vertically oriented. Pins get cut off in feeds if the ratio is greater than 1:3.5 so make sure the image isn’t too tall. For example, an image that is 600px wide should be between 900px and 2100px tall.”

However, Pinterest now recommends a resolution of 1000 x 1500 pixels, or any images with a 2:3 aspect ratio:

“When you pick images for Pinterest, think vertical. Most of our formats are vertical, and taller than they are wide. We recommend that you use a 2:3 aspect ratio for all of your Pins.
“Aspect ratio” may sound complicated, but it’s just a way to talk about an image’s width, compared to its height. A 2:3 aspect ratio means that your image’s width is ⅔ its height.
For example, your Pin could be 1,000 pixels wide, by 1,500 pixels tall. If your image falls outside this ratio, it could get truncated in people’s feeds and they won’t get to see your full Pin.”

Now you might be wondering what an ‘aspect ratio’ is. An aspect ratio is the relation between an image’s width and height.

Consider the following example:

600 pixels wide by 2,100 pixels tall and 400 pixels wide by 2,800 pixels tall are considered to have 1:3.5 aspect ratio. Meanwhile, 600 pixels wide by 900 pixels tall and 800 pixels wide by 1,200 pixels tall are considered to have a 2:3 aspect ratio.

You can create the image from scratch in softwares like Photoshop or Canva. These tools allow you to create a new image with specific dimensions and aspect ratios.

Canva provides pre-made templates that are specifically designed for Pinterest. These templates are usually 735px wide by 1,102px tall, a 2:3 aspect ratio.

The photo above is a free 1000px wide by 1,500px tall template from Canva. You can create your own and customize it for your brand.

Pinterest Marketing Tips- Avoid duplicating pins

Pinterest used to encourage us to pin our content to various boards and then pinning them again, but that is no longer the case. It’s now advised that you save ten or fewer highly relevant boards and duplicate only when necessary.

Now, pinners tend to interact with new content, and Pinterest is actively favoring it for distribution.

Pins with an exact image/URL combination that has previously been pinned to Pinterest are referred to as “duplicate pins.”

It’s still okay to re-share your own relevant seasonal and recurring content, as long as it’s done in moderation.

It’s better to concentrate your pinning efforts on generating fresh and original content. Curating relevant and high-quality content to your boards is ideal.

We recommend devoting most of your time to producing more fresh pins in order to maximize your reach.

Pinterest Marketing Tips- Start your own collaborative board or join someone else’s

Collaborative Board

Collaborative boards can help you reach a fresh range of pinners and increase the number of people who view your pins. You should be selective about which boards you join, as all of the pins will appear on your Pinterest profile. If you’re the group board’s owner, you’ll be able to choose the cover photo.

This works better for service based businesses or bloggers, but can also work for eCommerce brands. Create a collaborative board where Pinterest users can upload pins of them using and reviewing your products.

Bloggers and service based businesses can create collaborative boards filled with tips and other valuable content.

Pinterest Marketing Tips- Opt to add multiple products in a single pin

Kohls Pinterest

Including a variety of products in your pins helps increase engagement. This strategy can increase the value of a single pin because you will appeal to more people by providing more options.

You can demonstrate multiple uses for a single product or promote several complementary products, such as creating outfits or aesthetics around your product. This not only increases the likelihood of appealing to more consumers, but it also increases the likelihood of generating more sales.

Pinterest Marketing Tips- Overlay text on your images

Starbucks Pinterest Text Overlay

While descriptions are important, visuals are still king on Pinterest. However, creating visual content can require some assistance from someone with more experience. Adding text overlay to your photos can be helpful because Pinterest users tend to skim quickly through the feed. Text overlay can make your pins stand out, and explain why your pin and the content behind it is valuable.

Remember that text shouldn’t take up too much space on the photo. However, showing off step-by-step tutorials, bulleted lists, or a few sentences can still be beneficial.

Keep the content clear and simple, the words brief, and the overall readability easy. Using bold text might help the overlay text stand out. Also, make sure the text has a significant color contrast to the rest of the image.

Use light images

Aside from picture size and text overlay, the colors you use in your photos are also crucial for engagement and clicks. Lighter colored photos are routinely re-pinned more than darker photos. Warm hues are also twice as likely to be re-pinned than photos with predominantly blue tints.

If you want your pins to get a lot of attention, use dramatically contrasting colors to bring the eye straight to your content. Simply ensure that the main color is light to begin with.

Track your progress

It’s critical to have analytics and data on your Pinterest content marketing plan. With this information you can learn who your target audience is, track follows and unfollows, and see what content works or doesn’t work. Use this information to enhance your performance over time.

For those who have business accounts on Pinterest, there is an analytics tool that allows you to access statistics about pin performance and general audience.

If you prefer more detailed data and analytics, you can always try some of the Pinterest softwares and tools we’ve mentioned above.
